‘Big Mac’ wins @ Upper Hutt Classic Dirt Meet

A great venue at the Movie Set, a good new track and fine weather, 6 mths advance publicity for riders and the ‘Twinshock Dirt’ branding some would have thought a good rider turnout would be the order of the day. Admittedly some Pre 76 riders had been at events the previous 2 or 3 weekends so it was understandable they couldn’t make it. Apart from a  few Wellington locals and some visitors from Wanganui, Taupo, Taranaki and Hawkes Bay there were no riders from Manawatu, Kapiti or Horowhenua which was both a major surprise and disappointment. Much ‘noise’ is made about the strength of the sport in the central region so it was a real surprise. But as ‘Bryan Wade’ said at the prizegiving, this is another fantastic venue and you guys had a great time, your passion for the sport is great. Winners of the Twinshock Open Grade were Steve Gallichan Maico 440, followed by Bill Doe Suzuki RM370 and Warren Summers RM 370. Pre 76 250 Trophy went to Bill Doe Kawasaki 250, Open Pre 76 Trophy to Steve Gallichan Maico, Pre 70 350cc Trophy to Alan Burgess BSA and Pre 70 Open Trophy Bill Doe Rickman Metisse BSA 500. In the Twinshock 250 Grade Ross McKenzie ’79 Honda CR250 won from Bryan Tressider Yamaha IT 250 and Dave Newberry Yamaha YZ250. In the 4 Stroke race Big Mac won on his Honda XR500 while Bill Doe took out the 2 Stoke Race. The final all in Grand National 10 lap race was won by Steve Gallichan from Ross Mckenzie and Phil Grant came in third on his ’79 Honda CR 250. Special thanks to Bryan Wade and Richard Berry for the track set out help, Mike Marshal & the Triumph Riders Club, Spyda and the local crew who helped me run the meeting and Big Mac for arranging the land.  A great days racing but after a recent discussion with Big Mac I will not be running a trial and scramble on the same weekend in Wellington for Summer of 2013.

About Robert Cochrane

Enjoy all aspects of classic motorcycling, from dirt, racing, road, trials. My road classic bike is a 1971 BSA A65 Lightning 650cc that I use for BSA and Classic rallies. I have been active in classic bikes since 1977 and with friends started the NZ BSA Owners Club in 1978 and with other friends started the Wanganui Classic Club in Feb 2010. In late 2010 I started the NZ Classic & Twinshock Trials & Scramble Association with friends around the country to co-ordinate events and assist the development of the sport in NZ. As secretary its a lot of work but I believe its important to work in the best interests of the sport so I put my hand up. I write a motorcycle column for the Wanganui 'Midweek' newspaper 2 to 3 weeks a month, plus articles for VMX, Old Bike and Kiwi Rider. I own a BSA B25MX scrambler that my son raced for a few years and was ridden by Jeff Smith at the Legends of Dirt. It's resting in my shed as Dan is working offshore. I hosted the 'Suzuki 50 Yrs in NZ' event. My twinshock trials bike is a Kawasaki KT 250cc mount that I bought off TM Bill that has had lotsa time and a modest sum of money poured into it, but is a power of fun. I love motorcycling, its just the job that gets in the way of having full time fun.
